Brachial Plexus Palsy
Living with Brachial Plexus Palsy
The long-term goals for a child with brachial plexus palsy are to be
able to have partial use of an affected arm or a hand. Having the ability
to feed ones self or to use the affected arm or hand to help the
other arm lift and carry things is a realistic goal. Most of the mild
cases of brachial plexus palsy injuries recover in 3 to 4 months and
more severe cases improve slowly over 18 to 214 months. By the age of
2 no further improvement or recovery will be made in brachial plexus
injuries.
Adjusting to life with a brachial plexus injury can be challenging when
growing up. Things like driving a car can be a challenge without the
full use of the arm or hand. Finding lifestyle modifications can be very
helpful and there are ways to have special modifications made to make
things like driving with brachial plexus injuries easier. For example,
to find a vehicle to make driving safer and easier you should purchase
a vehicle that best suits your needs and also has a mobility program
that will pay for a large amount of your modification. When going to
the dealer to purchase your vehicle you should request for an application
form and have an assessment done at a driver assessment facility or by
your healthcare professional so that you can have a prescription detailing
the modifications needed due to the brachial plexus injuries. An adaptive
equipment dealer can do the required modification work and you can select
the equipment that will best assist your needs. A rebate form will can
be filled out and taken to the dealer.
Living with brachial plexus palsy injuries can be challenging but with
extra effort many people find they are able to live a life of near to
complete independence. While healthcare is becoming more advanced there
will be improved techniques and surgical procedures that will make the
adjustment for people living with brachial plexus injuries more smooth
and enjoyable.
